An Intro to Shabby Cheap

Sunday, March 4, 2012

What happens when you're unemployed for months and spend too much time reading blogs? You find a new hobby. Last year my husband and I started our adventures in refinishing and building furniture. He appropriately gave it the term of shabby cheap, so I found it only appropriate to tag these posts as such.

Before we invested too much time and money, we decided to start with something small. After visits to several local thrift shops we settled on an end table. As with most home projects, we had at least two trips to Lowe's or Home Depot before we finally got started. Our first step was to sand down the glossy finish to find out exactly what we were working with (we weren't sure if it was actually wood or not!).

After sanding, we painted a coat of primer and then a coat of white paint. Of course, we couldn't leave the gold drawer pull, so we switched it out with one we bought at the Restoration Hardware Outlet. The project didn't take more than a couple of days and in the end, we ended up with a lovely end table and a newfound love for shabby cheap DIY projects. And finally... the long awaited before and after photo!
